Fortune Lotus was born from a journey that crosses rivers, mountains, and cultures — and from the belief that beauty has meaning only when it connects us.

I grew up in Yunnan Province, China — a land unlike any other, where mountains, rivers, and cultures intertwine. Home to more than twenty-five ethnic minorities, Yunnan is a living tapestry of languages, festivals, and ways of life. From the embroidered garments of the Yi to the silver jewelry of the Miao, each community carries its own rhythm of beauty and belief, making Yunnan one of the most culturally diverse regions in China.

In the river lowlands, the Dai people live in harmony with water, guided by centuries of Theravada Buddhist traditions, where temples are not only places of prayer but also centers of learning and community. Far to the north, on the vast plateau of Shangri-La, Tibetan monasteries with golden roofs, such as Songzanlin, rise above the clouds — preserving sacred art, rituals, and the deep devotion of Tibetan culture. Growing up amid this diversity taught me that true beauty lies in balance — in harmony with nature, in resilience, and in the graceful coexistence of many traditions.

My father, Xiao Xing Hu, is a celebrated watercolor artist. Watching his lifelong dedication to art left a deep imprint on me. He taught me not just how to see beauty, but how to honor it — through patience, respect, and discipline. That artistic spirit shaped my early years as I explored Chinese painting, design, and sculpture, and it continues to guide me today.

Life carried me further. I worked in creative and commercial fields, lived in Thailand, and absorbed the gentle wisdom of Buddhism — how kindness, respect, and peace of mind can be woven into daily life. Eventually, I built a new home in the United States with my husband and our children, but I have always carried my roots with me, returning each year to reconnect with family and culture in Yunnan province.

When the pandemic struck, I witnessed the fragility of entire communities in Yunnan’s borderlands, once vibrant with jade trade and artisan markets. Families who had prospered for generations suddenly faced silence, loss, and uncertainty. Yet even in hardship, I saw the strength of tradition: temples filled with prayer, elders guiding the young with patience, and neighbors caring for one another. That resilience moved me deeply — and planted the seed for Fortune Lotus.
